Automatic garage door opener that is not responding.
Automatic garage door opener remote is a very handy little device. Thanks to it, you can enter or exit your garage at only one press of the button without having to lift up the heavy door yourself. The remote sends an infrared or IR signal to a receiver that pushes the switch, making an electric motor to open or close the garage door. To work correctly, the opener needs to be set within the specified range of its IR strength. If the signal is right and the device still isn’t working, here are a couple of ways to fix it.
Dead Batteries
Batteries are one of the most common problems with garage door remote controls. To make sure that the batteries are always good, use only quality brands to avoid issues. Also, rechargeable batteries are good for the environment and cost-effective in a long run perspective. They put out only 1.2 volts instead of 1.5 volts as the normal alkaline batteries usually do.
Battery Contacts
Worn out or wet contacts inside of the battery case affect the electrical current from fully reaching the circuit board inside of the garage door opener remote. When the contacts don’t seem rich, they are wet, pitted or discoloured; they should be dried and cleaned as quickly as possible. The problems listed above can often cause permanent damages to the device. The best way to polish your contact is to use a fine-grit sandpaper or fine steel wool.
Clean the Eyes
“The eye” is what we call the plastic covering the IR unit on the remote as well as garage door opener itself. The eye allows the IR signal to be passed through and received. Eyes can be easily cleaned by wiping them with a damp cloth. The remote’s eyes are usually made of plastic, and resistant to scratching. However, if rubbed against metal or dropped on the ground, it can get easily damaged. The plastic can be polished using specialised liquids, but if the IR eye on the remote control is badly scratched or gouged, it might have to be replaced.
Reset Garage Door Opener
Sometimes they need to be rebooted to restart the circuit boards. You can do it by removing the batteries for around 30 seconds and reinstalling them. A reset on automatic garage opener is accomplished by unplugging the unit from the wall socket for around a minute and plugging it back in.
